Maternity Leave?
My husband and I are pla
nning to start trying to get pregnant sometime in 2013. I will finish school as a nurse in the Spring, and was wondering if anyone knows the ‘rule of thumb’ on how long you are typically required to be at a job before being qualified for paid maternity leave? I know maternity leave is offered to everyone, but that sometimes its without pay. Or does it just depend on the place of employment?
Emma answers:
It depends on the place, but I know when mine starts after 12 months and it’s just a question of how long you get paid for.
I know that here you get your full pay for 2 weeks after a year, 4 weeks after 3 years and 6 weeks after 5 years.

Maternity leave?
I work at circuit city i am 3 months pregnant. Even now my job is getting hard for me to do. We are not allowed to sit down why we are on the clock. I am either checking customers out, greeting customers at the door, or i am putting up displays and doing tags. Being on my feet for 9+ hours at a time is getting very hard for me. I was wondering when most people take maternity leave? And if companys had to give you paid maternity leave because me and my fiance both work and pay rent and going 6 weeks after the baby would be very hard on our pockets.
Emma answers:
I am not sure what state you live in, but I know the feeling of being uncertain about disability, and being on your feet all day long. I am a general manager of a Burger King, and in the restaraunt business, there is not much time to sit down, especially when you are the boss. I am 36 weeks pregnant, and the doctor just finally took me out… I worked through it. The first thing is do they know that you are pregnant at your job? If they do, they should be more than understanding, and just tell them you need to rest when you need to, just don’t take advantage of it, if they are nice enough to cater to your needs, because technically being pregnant is considered a disability, and as long as with adequate help, you can still complete your job duties, they can’t fire you (that’s how it works in NJ anyway)… As far as disability payments go… In the state of New Jersey, your job has to hold your job for 12 weeks… You qualify for disability when your doctor takes you out of work for medical reasons…. Generally we get 4 weeks before the due date and 6 weeks after a vaginal delivery, longer if you have a c section, or p.p. Depression. The state of New Jersey offers .66% of what you make during the previous 8 weeks. (Which is two thirds of what you are making)… Also since you are on disabitily and not working, check out your local food stamp program, because I know I qualified here in the state of New Jersey… Which kind of makes up for the other third of income that you are losing… Also look into working from home, there are lots of things that you can do to make sure that ends meet. Just make sure that whatever income you make doing things from home, goes under your fiances name, so you don’t get in trouble. You are at the mark now, where working should get easier… The second trimester should give you lots of energy…. But if you are getting dizzy, and you really can’t physically handle it, the best thing for you to do is talk to your doctor!! The most important thing is the life that you are carrying inside of you!!! Try to stay strong and hold out for the energy, and don’t forget to talk to your boss… I can’t imagine that they wouldn’t understand…. And Circuit City may have to pay your disability as well, if they offer it, ASK!!!! If not the government does help!

maternity leave?
I only work once a week on a saturday for a few hours. am i entitled to maternity leave? I am due in August and want to know what my rights are.
i live in the uk
Emma answers:
You will be given maternity leave, the law is just changing so it will be 52 weeks by the time your kid is born. You will be given either stuatory maternity pay or maternity allowance depending on how long you have worked for your employer, you will still accrue holidays and such while you are on maternity leave, they will give you the cash normally, rather than the days off.

Jenny asks…
How much maternity leave did you take? When did you start your maternity leave?
I have been advised by Dr to start maternity leave asap which is at 29 weeks in the UK. How long did you take to be with your baby? Am worried that if I start maternity leave too soon I won’t have as long off once the baby is born, however I want to follow what I have been advised by my doctor.
Emma answers:
I left at 36 weeks, I go back when my son is 11 mths. I am in Canada so we get 52 weeks.
